The first time I saw the Great Gatsby was one summer more than five years ago. He was a slim, fair-haired man, and I was startled by his thin, rather handsome face. He was a young man of thirty, and a little tipsy, and as he talked about his old family house at West Egg he smiled with a mixture of regret and something like triumph.
